The Great Loop
My four year plan changed quickly once we got the boat into the water. Summer sailing on the great lakes is cool and refreshing. We are in no great rush to head south.
After spending the summer in Sheboygan , we sailed 30 miles south to Port Washington where the boat was hauled out and shipped to Ashland Wisconsin. This is Susan's home town where it will stay for a year or two sailing the Apostle islands. It will give us time to visit old friends and hopefully get up there more often as it is only 60 miles from our cabin. Ashland Marina is a good take off point for sailing the Apostle Islands. These sails will be short so Seeley (our dog) will be along for many of them.
The Summer of 2015 we set sail to Isle Royal Crossing Lake Superior from south to north. It was a 22 to 24 hr sail each way. We sailed all night to the island without spotting a light, land or a boat. Isle Royale is our most northern point in our journey. From here is all south and east.
We took a trip to Cuba this winter and fell in love with it. It's an unlimited cruising ground just 90 mile from the US. So that's our new target. The Summer of 2016 has put us at the tip of Lake Michigan /Lake Huron. The most northern tip of the Great loop route in the picture above. From there we must decide to go east out the great lake and the Erie Canal or south down Lake Michigan and down the rivers to Mobile Alabama. We will sail the north channel in 2017 and maybe another year as well. . So far we have sailed Panta Rhei about 1000 miles.
